When I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I would go to Giants games. I was so surprised how people could still be fans of Barry Bonds. He was a swollen tick of a man and was clearly the Juiciest Man Who Ever Juiced, but Giants fans cheered for him like he was a hero. Everyone knew he was a cheat, but he was THEIR cheat. His brazen self-frankensteinification worked in their favor, so they loved him.

I think that same mentality helps people rest easy despite the fact that incidents like Darren Wilson/Michael Brown happen ALL THE TIME. The system is absolutely rigged, but too many people believe that they benefit from the system being rigged. There are still too many people who view young black men as an opposing team, a horde of bogeymen waiting in the shadows to take everything away from them. So an unarmed young black man gets blown away in broad daylight. It’s plenty easy to ignore the morality of the situation if you believe this dead kid in the street keeps the horde away from your door for another night.
